11:52 am - Re-Establishing Windows XP Network Credentials

(This is a "feature" of Windows networking that has aggravated me for years. Anyone who can teach me a workaround will gain my undying gratitude.)

Between docking and undocking my laptop, and using it at home, I've somehow managed to lose my network credentials yet again. I don't want to have to reboot just so I can print a one-page text file.

Is there any way to re-establish my network credentials without rebooting my machine? (Logging out of Windows would be just as disruptive as a reboot, as I would have to close out all of my windows with work in progress.)

Please note that my TCP/IP network connectivity is working perfectly. I have a zillion open SSH sessions, web browser windows, IMAP views, etc. none of which are affected by this bit of Windows stupidity.

Failing that, is there a way to set up this machine so I can log in and out of Windows without interrupting tasks I have in progress?

05:30 pm - Telemarketer Annoyance du Jour

I've just gotten two incoming phone calls where a recording says

"Oh, I'm sorry, I've called the wrong number. Bye-bye."

I assume that they are pre-screening for human responses at phone numbers that will later be called by telemarketers.

That's just such a horrendously inconsiderate use of technology.

Maybe we should push for a National Don't Buy From Telemarketers Day :-) It won't accomplish much, but if it gets half the press of National Buy Nothing Day, it might get some of these more obnoxious tactics changed...

06:08 pm - A Trip Down Memory Lane...

[info]entirelysonja wrote somewhere else: [Talking about one of her midterms] Unlike my other class, where the exam questions were kinda random...

And then there was the midterm for my CMSC 311 class, where 25% of the midterm (given the Monday after Thanksgiving) was a question based on material (not in the book or on the syllabus) which was introduced at the sparsely-attended class held from 3-4:15 pm on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, which was also when the date for the midterm was announced.

(The prof in question had longer tenure than the Chancellor, and pulled in major millions of research dollars every years. He had not wanted to be teaching a lecture hall of undergrads, and took it out on us.)

Wow, I hadn't realized I could still feel so bitter after all these years...

(I got an A. I still didn't think the class was fair.)

05:11 pm - Idea: Put a deposit on cigarette butts.

I was responding to [info]zephyrgrrl's gripe about cigarettes, and made a rant I just need to share more widely...
fire and litter problems from cigarette butts. )

Now if only we could get a deposit on (filtered) cigarette butts, we'd solve a litter problem and reduce a fire hazard in one fell swoop...
